The beloved hymn, The Old Rugged Cross is presented here as a gentle rock ballad. Solo flugelhorn is featured on the opening melody, then the tune is passed through the sections accompanied by lush, contemporary harmonies. This arrangement has no improv solo responsibilities and the conservative range and rhythmic responsibilities make it accessible to ensembles encompassing a wide range of abilities. Appropriate for sacred or secular occasions, or as a nice ballad contrast for festival programs.
